Essay Writing Signposting TextIn academic writing, the author is responsible for making the text as clear as possible for the reader. An active reader will want to know what the author rsquo s aims are and how they will be achieved what the author rsquo s position is about key issues how the argument is constructed how ideas relate to each other. Good writers use signposting language to signal to the reader where these answers can be found. It is useful to divide signposting language into two broad categories: major signposts that signal key aspects of the work, such as purpose, structure, author rsquo s stance, main points, direction of the argument, conclusions. linking words and phrases that show connections between sentences and paragraphs. exemplifying: for example, hellip / for instance, hellip / to exemplify, hellip it rsquo s the way you signal the path you have taken though an assignment. In other words, it rsquo s the information you give about what topics are going to be covered, the order in which they come and the angle or focus of the discussion or argument. Major signposts ndash these are the words and phrases that tell your reader the purpose, structure, your position, main points, direction of the argument and signal your conclusion. This is where you have a chance to identify the key themes of your discussion, your main argument and focus. Showing cause and effect: accordingly, as a result, consequently, for that reason, for this purpose, hence, therefore, etc. Placing ideas in time: again, at first, at least, at length, at once, at that time, at the same time, concurrently, during this time, earlier, eventually, finally, first, second, third, etc. Summarising ideas: all in all, altogether, as has been noted, finally, in brief, in conclusion, in other words, in short, in simpler terms, in summary, etc. The aim of this study is to hellip the purpose of this thesis is to hellip this essay argues that hellip the main questions addressed in this paper are hellip this essay critically examines hellip the above discussion raises some interesting questions. Try making this paragraph flow correctly: sometimes referred to as transitioning, signposting can link main sections of a document, as well as smaller sections such as sentences and paragraphs. Signposts can signal stages of development or a change in ideas or arguments and provide clear clues where we're going. Even then, skillful writers will integrate any direction indicators into their work as unobtrusively as possible. In some of the sciences it is necessary to announce in advance what you will be writing about. However, these pieces of work are likely to be closer to experimental reports than continuous prose arguments. Similarly, in some branches of psychology or linguistics, students may sometimes be required to offer a meta critique of a written assignment. This is to demonstrate their awareness of the processes in which they are engaged. With these few exceptions, you should not normally comment on the manner in which you have written an essay. Your tutor doesnt need to know in what order you assembled your evidence, or what difficulties you encountered during its composition.
