Tuition costs have risen significantly in the last few decades, and there aren’t any signs of this trend slowing down. The government needs to work to reduce the cost of college tuition because college is necessary in a competitive economy, tuition has become too expensive for the majority of average americans, and the current system of financial aid is ineffective. The problem of rising tuition costs affects not only students, but also their families. Most average eighteen year olds planning on attending college don’t have enough money to pay for college, forcing them to rely on their parents for financial help.

In recent years, more high school graduates than ever have been choosing to attend college. It’s become a joke around many college campuses that a master’s degree is the new equivalent to a bachelor’s degree twenty years ago. In a competitive economy, employers can afford to hire only small numbers of new employees. An education from a four year university has become a necessary fixture to the top of any resume. Unfortunately, some students are denied the opportunity for such an education due to financial restraints. College graduates earn significantly more in their lifetimes as opposed to those who only have a high school degree.

Employers are looking for more specialized skill sets from potential employers, but these skill sets can usually only be acquired through higher education. In the job market, those people who can’t afford a college education are usually behind those who can. The government needs to help subsidize or reduce tuition costs so more people have access to a college education.

If more people had college educations, they would be able to get better paying jobs. When people have more money, they tend to spend more money, causing the economy to grow. One of the major problems with rising tuition costs is the absence of an affordable option. Many students used to rely on state funded or supported colleges for an inexpensive and quality education but are now finding that avenue unavailable. Tuition for a private university could cost upwards of $40,0, but students used to be able to turn to a less costly state institution. It is not uncommon for many students to face thousands of dollars in debt after graduation. Many middle class families have the paradoxical problem of having too high a net income to qualify for financial aid, but still do not have enough money to pay for college out of pocket. Academic scholarships are extremely competitive and often aren’t enough to pay for the entirety of a tuition bill. Currently, there are government funds available for students, but it’s become apparent that these simply aren’t enough.
