As a name gives an identity to a person, family traditions differentiate a family, making each and every family unique and special. My family starts off each day with a prayer to thank god for what we are and who we are, and to ensure his presence in our day. Friday nights are also looked forward to as time spent together playing board games, cards, or watching a movie. Holidays mean a lot to my family, for they help build everlasting memories and enrich our culture.

Some important holidays in hindu culture are holi, ramnavmi, janmastami, navratri, and diwali. Each holiday has its own meaning and importance, and celebrating them with their true meaning makes them especially joyful. Ramnavmi and janmastami are two holidays which celebrate the birthdays of the god rama, and lord krishna. Our family fasts on this day, and we spend our evening at the temple singing hymns in praise of our gods.

My family and i have gone through many traditions with some we still carry on, and some that have been left behind. I was in kindergarten at the time and i remember making christmas ornaments in class to bring home to our tree. We would cut the shape of a christmas tree out of green construction paper and decorated them with crayons, beads, glitter and whatever other materials we could find. I would bring it home that day and my mom would hang it up right in the middle of our tree with all the rest of the there are numerous factors that either make up or restrain the self identity of a person or an individual. Culture, in addition to family traditions, is one of the factors that affect the self identity of an individual. When growing up, the environment around affect the personality, values, as well as, beliefs of an individual. The environment includes friends, family members, and the people that affect the life of an individual. So, if the environment is negative, then an individual will have low self esteem.

Moreover, as an individual grows up from being a child, they receive cultural values from the family or the society around. There are questions raised on matters dealing with identity: can an individual choose his or her own identity? if yes, how much can one choose? identity is a very complex issue. It comprises of many inner qualities, as well as outer representations of an individual. There are numerous characteristics that do define what an individual is made up of. The self can include things like gender, sexuality, and sense of belonging to a family, culture, nation, or any other group.
