Media Studies a Level Coursework Brief Text

Jonathan Friesen - Writing Coach

Introduction media studies brief for our coursework we decided to make a music video, based on our original idea of a jackass style programme. Jackass is a programme of various dangerous and stupid stunts, which are all a bit different. We decided against this idea as it restricted our power to change it into an original concept. We decided to make a music video using a punk song, as these have a very broad band of what can be included. We started by making a song in the style of a well known band, blink 182, but we changed it to incorporate our life at college.

We are loosely basing it on a theme of our college life but at the different extremes. We are using what levi strauss called binary opposites, these are extreme opposites, for example a bad guy being ugly and a good guy being extremely attractive. We then thought back to the programme jackass and one of their famous sketches is the presenters being pushed around in a shopping trolley. We thought of using this but needed a binary opposite to go in it so we thought of having someone pushing the trolley quite normally with shopping in it. Also just walking around college, the band walking down a corridor and turning around a corner with them running down the corridor in the underpants and running into the girls toilet.

We thought of using the phrase that we had heard a lot from the show south park, whenever there is drugs or alcohol involved, one of the characters, chef always says there is a time and a place for everything, and it's called college! . The whole video is supposed to be a joke filled, fun and non serious which is the whole idea of punk rock, a lot of songs are just parodies. We are also going to have lots of shots of the band so people can see them and know who is playing. Bands do this so they can see who is performing and identify with them and decide who is their favourite. Sometimes they can pretend to play roles which can lead on to a narrative in the video, taking for example, sum 41 in their in too deep video they have the lay about band, with the jocks fighting against each other in a diving contest, we want the band to win which is made in a binary opposite the baddies are made to be speedo wearing narcissists and the band wearing any old shorts and not particularly full of themselves. Introduction media studies coursework for my coursework i intend to produce a short advertising campaign consisting of a 30 second moving image. I aim to produce one moving image which will be based upon an anti child abuse theme.

I will research about the issue to further my knowledge and make sure what i am producing is accurate information. I want to produce this advert to alert the issues of child abuse by using powerful imagery and shocking facts. I decided to focus on child abuse as the research i carried out on the internet showed that not enough awareness was being raised for the matter, i also think that it is an important issue to address to my target audience of 25 35 year olds.

I began researching general charity campaigns and took into account my chosen target audience of adults, it was difficult choosing the age range as anybody could witness child abuse, but i am targeting it at 25 35 as the other parent could speak out, or friends of the parents. For my preliminary research i am going to internet search engines as large amount of help is available with many charities and organizations have websites. I decided to do my campaign for child abuse as there is lots of information regarding bullying and abuse in the home, but not many entirely concentrate on child abuse. Campaign adverts use persuasive language to encourage people to support their campaign. The final product will be a moving image, with this i want to use short sentences which have powerful meanings e.g. I will also use lots of repetition to create effect and power so that the message is clearly reached.

Using imagery of sad children will also play a large focus in my advert as it will be emotive for the viewer and hopefully will feel compiled to help. Also during the advert i will have music which will play behind the images as this also brings emotion and empathy. I will take all the images myself then edit and improve them with the software camedia.

To begin with, the editing and camera work has improved largely, although this is possibly down to the amount of freedom we had on the final task compared to the preliminary one, as on the preliminary task we had to include the 180 degree rule, match on action, and shot/reverse shots.

In this respect i think the preliminary task is slightly better because of the amount of technical aspects, although i do think that there are very few places where these could have been added to our final product. My favourite would be the one where it pans down from the front door to the photo frame, as i think it looks professional. Although, on our preliminary task i favoured the final image of the ghost teenager. Another thing i preferred in our final piece to our preliminary task was the way in which the title appeared, i feel hunger had more impact than the hospital in this sense. Throughout the hospital we kept to the 180 degree rule, as this was part of our brief, although in hunger i feel we crossed it a few times.

Although i also think that in our crossing of it, it fitted with the genre of the film. Horror films often confuse and disorientate the audience, so in this case crossing of the line is acceptable. I feel we crossed this when doing the close up of jacks face when he reads his wall.

I think overall we have shown a lot of development within our final piece from our preliminary task, especially where sound is considered. During our preliminary task we used a limited amount of sound effects, and during the speech there was no background noise, when if i was to have done it now it would make sense to get some background noise involved to show the rest of the hospital to be a busy working place. Within hunger there are only one to two seconds of the film without an non digetic sound added. Even throughout the starting scene we have added the addition of outside noises to drown out the rain this was done to keep continuity as it was filmed at different times. what have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? this image shows the equipment we used to record our film on, a standard hd video recording camera was used for the whole performance. During the recording process each one of us learnt the basics on how to use cameras like these, although our main camera man was james, so he has the most experience.
