Impact of information technology on productivity this program is offered by the department of management science and information systems msis. It is the continuation of the previous concentration in management science and the program of operations research offered by the rutgers center for operations research rutcor. Primary areas of interest are applied statistics, optimization, business analytics, operations management, inventory theory, scheduling, manufacturing under uncertainty, queuing theory, and risk theory. Faculty research interests range from methodology research to quantitative modeling to empirical studies. Many faculty members serve on editorial boards of major academic journals, have chaired at premier conferences in operations and management science and have been members of nsf panels and other advisory boards. Graduates of the program have obtained academic positions at highly rated american universities including case western reserve university, georgetown university, united states military academy, new york university, northwestern university, princeton university, and others, as well as many top universities in other countries. The students should have solid college level knowledge of linear algebra, analysis, and probability, and good programming skills. Students who aspire to doctoral study in operations research but need to strengthen their background may wish to consider our master in information technology program, which admits both part time and full time students. Students in this program take many of the same courses as our doctoral students in accounting information systems and may use these courses towards their doctoral degree if they are later admitted to the doctoral program. Course work, the qualifying examination, and the dissertation a total of 72 credits is required for the doctoral degree. Additional enrollments may also be required: students are sometimes required to enroll in non degree courses to improve their english or their writing. They may also need to enroll in the non degree course teacher training seminar as part of their preparation for teaching. These enrollments require payment of tuition, but they do not count towards the 72 credits required for the degree. Students must enroll in 29 every semester until they have defended a dissertation proposal. A grade is given, but the enrollment is for zero credits and no tuition is charged. Students take three courses for degree credit each semester during the first two years. Within a year after passing the qualifying examination, the student should defend a dissertation proposal. Before doing so, the student is expected to enroll in 21 teacher training seminar, which is taught in the spring semester each year. first early research requirement equivalent to one course: students write a paper with a faculty member, to be presented to the department during the fall semester. second early research requirement equivalent to one course: write a paper ideally a dissertation proposal with a faculty member, to be presented to the department during the fall semester. Part time students may postpone participation to the summer after the third year. other rules and requirements: for details of rules and requirements that apply to all doctoral students in rbs, see policies and procedures. The doctor of philosophy program prepares students to pursue careers in research and/or teaching in operations research. Students enrolled in the program augment the breadth of the course work required for the master's degree with courses designed to provide a deeper theoretical understanding of the subject matter of operations research. Each student develops an expertise and does original work in a selected area of operations research. The university of north carolina at chapel hill imposes general requirements on all candidates for the doctor of philosophy degree. Master Thesis Project Computer ScienceThese requirements are set forth in the record of the university of north carolina at chapel hill the graduate school. 50 customarily students choose their electives to supplement their knowledge of the area selected for research. After completing most of the required courses the student is given a comprehensive written examination. The purpose of the examination is to measure the student's mastery of fundamental topics in the mathematical sciences relevant to operations research. After passing the examination, the student chooses the remaining coursework and a research topic suitable for a ph.d. Near the end of all coursework the student takes an oral examination designed to reveal an in depth understanding of the area selected for research. The examination committee is composed of the dissertation director and four other faculty members, at least three of whom are on the operations research faculty. Successful completion of the examination signifies faculty approval for admission to candidacy for the doctoral degree and initiation of dissertation research. Topics, advisors, and employment copies of dissertations of students graduated after 2007 can be found online at the pqdt database. michael lamm, confidence intervals for solutions to variational inequalities. placement: sas, cary, nc minghui liu, elementary reformulation and succinct certificates in conic linear programming.
