In chapter thirteen, tom finds willie in a cupboard under the stairs, where his mother had locked him. A thin emaciated boy with matted hair and skin like parchment was tied to a length of copper piping’. This shows that despite how nice and loving willie was to his mother, she was still cruel and clearly not fit to be a mother. In chapter twenty, willie and tom find out that willie’s mother had killed herself.
