Submitted by hannah may 158 , age 15 tom and willie change a lot throughout the book. How do they change and why? the first impression of tom oakley is that he is a grumpy and impatient man. Essay Topics EvelineWe know this because the author uses the word ‘bluntly’ after he said ‘yes’. By writing this, magorian has made it seem like tom is annoyed and frustrated that someone has interrupted his privacy. We know this because in the first chapter, magorian uses the words ‘with shaking fingers’. This conveys a sense that willie is nervous and doesn’t really know about normal family life. We know this because the author uses writes ‘he looked at the poker leaning against the range. Surely not! this suggests that willie has a horrible mother and has had a terrible childhood. Through page thirty four and thirty five, we see that tom is beginning to get quite fond of willie, but he is cautious that he must not. By reading this, we might think that tom knows that the war will soon be over and willie will soon to be going home, so tom mustn’t get too attached to him otherwise it will be harder for him to let go. Throughout chapter four, willie seems to become more relaxed about living with tom. We know this because the author says that he and tom go into town together to do jobs. By reading this, we think that willie is feeling more confident in the town of little wierwold and that he trusts tom to look after him. I’m called zach for short you know that willie and zach are going to get along well together. On page eighty, tom begins to become more generous and kind towards other people. We know that he wanted to do this, because magorian writes ‘ tom raised his arm. I’m volunteering, like this suggests that since willie had been living with him, he has become softer and less grumpy. We know this because the author says ‘george, carrie and ginnie were to be in mrs hartridge’s class again.’ and the later on magorian writes ‘you’ll have to go and sit with mrs black’s class’. We know he is upset about not being with the others because magorian says ‘he felt utterly humiliated’. Medal of Honor EssayThis suggests that he really wanted to be with the others at school, because they make him feel more confident. You can tell tom was proud of willie because tom says ‘good’ quite a lot whilst willie is writing. The reader might think this because willie was told things about going to hell and sinful colours by his mother. In chapter nine, it is willie’s birthday, although it seems that he has never actually experienced one. We know this because on page one hundred and eight, willie asks are they fer me? when he sees parcels and envelopes surrounding his place on the table. Another example is that magorian writes ‘so this is what a birthday party was like. He had heard people at school talking about them.’ this suggests that willie had never had a birthday party, and didn’t really know what one was. In chapter twelve, the school christmas show was becoming a disaster as lots of evacuee children were going home to see their families for christmas, except for willie, zach and some others. We know this because magorian writes that zach is ‘mesmerised’ and miss thorne the teacher in charge of the play ‘watched him grow visibly older’. Also, later on, magorian writes ‘ i really believed you were that horrible old man’ said carrie in admiration’ this conveys a sense that people thought willie was a truly amazing actor. They had both felt too numb.’ the reader thinks that this is a hard and sad time for william and tom. We know this because on page one hundred and seventy seven, magorian says ‘willie’s lips quivered’ which shows that he is close to crying. On page one hundred and eighty one, we realise how much willie has actually changed, because magorian writes ‘she had been looking for a thin little boy dressed in grey. Here stood an upright, well fleshed boy in sturdy ankle boots, thick woollen socks, a green rolled top jersey, and a navy blue coat and balaclava. His hair stuck out in a shiny mass above his forehead and his cheeks were round and pink.’ this shows how much willie had changed over his time in little wierwold from a small, frail, scared little boy to a confident, healthy boy. In chapter thirteen, tom finds willie in a cupboard under the stairs, where his mother had locked him. A thin emaciated boy with matted hair and skin like parchment was tied to a length of copper piping’. This shows that despite how nice and loving willie was to his mother, she was still cruel and clearly not fit to be a mother. In chapter twenty, willie and tom find out that willie’s mother had killed herself. College Essay Organizer College ConfidentialWe know that willie was shocked at this because magorian writes ‘will gazed at her in stunned disbelief.’ the lady that told will this was from a children’s home is sussex, and was happy to have him there. We know this because the author states ‘he slammed the door behind him and stood in the hallway trembling.’ and later on, she writes ‘he sat on his bed feeling both furious and helpless.’ but, to will’s relief, tom and the lady had discussed and tom was to adopt will. By writing ‘with threw his arms around him and together they danced and cavorted across the room shouting and yelling’ magorian’s sentence conveys a sense that they are very overjoyed about this case. This happiness was not going to last very long though, because in chapter twenty one, zach goes back to london to visit his parents, but there was intense bombing and zach was killed. We know that everyone was devastated because magorian wrote ‘dr little looked grave and aunt nance had been crying. Essay Writing Services MelbourneIn one black moment he felt his legs buckling up underneath him and he collapsed into unconsciousness.’ on the last two pages, will notices another change. He only noticed it because he hung up his cap and realised he used to reach up to it. We know that he is proud of it because magorian writes ‘dad’, repeated will, in a surprised tone, ‘i’m growing! there have been no comments for this submission. you have not saved any essays.
