College Application Essay QuestionsThe main focus of the paper is on the intellectual and emotional reactions of the students toward a quite new for them kind of textbook and corresponding course. It is shown how certain cultural and his torical factors characteristic of the ukrainian intellectual context have left obvious imprints on the learners’ responses to the textbook. This suggests that there may be a need for modified versions of such materials designed specifically for nonnative speakers living outside anglo phone environments, educated within different intellectual traditions, and yet willing to mas ter academic english for the purposes of international scientific communication. It is argued that such alternate versions should be explicitly genre based, possess a strong language focus, and include at least some instances of comparison of english and li genre exemplars in order to develop the learners’ abilities of making more conscious selections and choices in writing. Format of a Book Review EssayAlthough the appropriateness of a textbook to learners’ needs and to the socio cultural context of its use is an important and standard pedagogical requirement, are studying in educational and cultural settings different from those initially tar geted by the authors. However, general expectations to the contrary, such ‘‘impro per’’ cases of textbook and pedagogical materials use may not only turn out to be successful, but can additionally provide new insights into learning processes and into the educational values and interests of english for specific purposes esp learners. In this paper, such a perspective has been chosen for discussing a recent pedago gical experience of using a us based english fo academic purposes eap writing textbook in the ukrainian university classroom.
