It demonstrates to others that you can take instruction as well as give instruction. It has been said that a good leader knows when to utilize the strengths and expertise of his/her followers to achieve the goal. Having faith in your subordinates will strengthen their faith in your leadership. Treat others with respect: no matter how much you respect your peers and subordinates, if you do not treat them with respect, you cant earn their respect. This sometimes is difficult for persons who are highly technically skilled, but they need to master this quality. Communications skills: a leader must be able to communicate at many different levels of understanding if he/she is to be effective as a leader.

Taking an employee out to lunch or having a team get together for a bbq are ways that can lead to building a solid team environment that might help to jump start the communications process. Train your replacement: teach someone on your team as much as you can about what you know and what you need to do for your job.
