These papers were written primarily by students and provide critical analysis of house on mango street by sandra cisneros. Sandra cisneros attempts to reconstruct the traditionally patriarchal realm that is the house and negotiate a space for women. Her bilingual dedication a las mujeres/to the women recognizes her ethnicity as well as her gender, which immediately. The perception of the crucial and critical topic of sex held by the majority of adolescents, even in today’s progressive world, is alarmingly apocryphal. The world’s frantic attempts to preserve the beauty of childhood’s innocence and the alluring. In sandra cisneros’ work the house on mango street, young esperanza must face the trials and tribulations that accompany growing up. This daunting task is made all the more difficult by society’s views of her race and gender.

As eleanor roosevelt once said, ldquo the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams rdquo. Esperanza is someone who shows the meaning and actuality of this quote perfectly. Esperanza, the strong willed girl who dreams big despite her surroundings and limitations, is the main character in the house on mango street by sandra cisneros. Throughout the novella, she goes through many different changes as she tries to find for who she is. She evolves from insecure and not knowing who she is to confident and knowing where she wants her life to take her. This shows esperanza rsquo s insecurity because her mom is still a big comfort source to her. She feels nice and safe even when she isn rsquo t because her mom is there and will protect her. In addition, esperanza rsquo s immaturity is shown when she says, ldquo they are stupid people who are lost and got here by mistake rdquo cisneros 28. This plainly shows how defensive and protective esperanza is towards her barrio by calling them stupid for reacting the way they do, even though she dislikes mango street. She thinks immaturely, calling then ldquo stupid people rdquo and not really trying to understand their point of view. Though esperanza maintains these characteristics, you soon see her slight yet palpable maturity. As esperanza develops as a person, she goes through another phase where she is still young and immature, however she starts to show obvious signs of maturity and growing up.

An example of this is when esperanza is standing up for her sister by saying, ldquo that rsquo s right, i add before lucy of rachel can make fun of her rdquo cisneros 50. This act is an obvious sign of her maturity because she stands up for her sister, nenny, and does the right thing instead of caring about what her friends think about her. She is taking on more and more responsibilities as she grows up, including watching and caring for nenny. As she progresses, she shows hints of growing up physically and mentally, but once again, not entirely.

She shows this when they are trying on the heels that they were given and by saying, ldquo yes, it rsquo s true. Skinny and spotted with satin scars where scabs were picked, but legs, all our own, good to look at, and long rdquo cisneros 40. They all realize that they are finally growing up when they notice their slightly more womanly, adult figures.

The long legs show their slight maturity, but their scars and scabs show that they are still young. However slight the changes in esperanza rsquo s character might be, they continue to come as she grows older and finds her place in the world. Towards the end of the noel, esperanza finally grows up and becomes self confident.
