The university of chicago school of social service administration has been a leader in social work and social welfare scholarship since we helped establish social work as a field of scholarly inquiry in 1908 and our doctoral program in 1920. The university itself is home to six graduate and professional schools, offering ssa doctoral students extraordinary opportunities for cross disciplinary study and research. The program is designed to deepen students’ mastery of both social science theory and research methods so that they are prepared to contribute to scholarly knowledge in innovative ways. We do not provide specific clinical training for practitioners beyond the master's level. Our faculty members take great pride and pleasure in working across disciplinary boundaries to address the most pressing issues in social welfare and believe mentoring new colleagues is an important part of their mission. They use a variety of different methods in their research and the doctoral program supports students who want to use quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods research approaches. Which includes up to five years of tuition and fees, health insurance, as well as research and teaching stipends.

Ssa also provides financial support for doctoral students who are presenting their work at conferences and makes arrangements for students to practice their academic presentation skills. Ssa students have been very successful in obtaining competitive fellowships such as the illinois consortium for educational opportunity program fellowships, fahs beck dissertation fellowships, and the center for gender studies dissertation awards. The pre doctoral interdisciplinary research training program in the education sciences at uchicago provides entering doctoral students in the school of social service administration with advanced training in state of the art quantitative methods and experience integrating research and practice concerning the contributions of schooling to the academic and labor market success of youth. Successful applicants will receive $30,0 per year for five years in stipend support, additional funds for travel and research, full tuition, and opportunities for funded dissertation projects. applicants for this training program must apply at the same time as the application for admission. please see here for additional information. Graduates of other law school programs in the united states may be admitted to the chicago j.s.d. Degree from a law school in the united states or are currently in such a program. ll.m.

Degrees earned in other countries, including those using the common law, do not meet this application requirement. Degree, a candidate must produce a dissertation which makes a creditable contribution to legal scholarship. The dissertation must be supervised by at least two members of the faculty and must be completed within five years of the candidate's first registration in the j.s.d. A candidate must spend at least two years six academic quarters in residence at the law school while working on the dissertation.

During the years in residence the candidate will be expected to participate in the academic activities at the law school on a daily basis. This will include 1 taking at least three courses related to the dissertation in the law school or elsewhere in the university during the two years of residence this requirement may be waived for students who did their ll.m. Studies at chicago 2 regular attendance at one of the faculty workshops 3 regular attendance at the weekly faculty works in progress lunches and 4 active participation in the research colloquium for j.s.d.

They are also expected to keep in regular contact with their faculty supervisors. In june, at the end of the first year of the program, and every six months thereafter, students must submit to their faculty supervisors a progress report describing dissertation specific work they have done since the previous report. Copies of these reports should also be sent to the dean of the graduate studies program.
