In the united states, most schools have a dress code, but most do not require school uniforms. You can generally wear what you want as long as it is not offensive, revealing, falling apart, etcetra. As well as several schools around the world, have switched to mandatory school uniforms for students. These may include skirts and blouses or dresses for girls and nice, collared shirts and dress pants for boys, or something similar, but they are all exactly the same. Are uniforms really a good idea though? first lets address some of the reasons why uniforms are used. Supposedly, uniforms are intended to increase academic achievement because students are less concerned with other people around them. If everyone has to wear the same thing, then poor students who wear resale clothing and unbranded attire need not concern themselves with being made fun of by those who wear name brand clothes.

For one thing, if kids are going to make fun of someone, theyre going to find a way to do it regardless. Sadly this is just part of the school atmosphere, and making everyone wear the same clothes will just give them something else to seek and make fun of. If kids want to hurt others, theyre going to do it regardless of the clothes theyre wearing.

It might just make them more conscious of that pimple on one kids neck or the missing tooth another kid has. Easier identification of who does and does not belong on campus and less opportunity for gang members to express themselves have also been cited as reasons behind school uniforms. If someone wants to get on campus that doesnt belong, all they need to do is borrow a uniform from a student. Siblings who want to go to the school and make trouble could even steal it right out of their closet, especially if they have spares which is usually the case. Im not saying they would do this, just that it is not a good way to deter people from coming on campus that dont belong. Why not just have students carry a school identification card to verify they belong on campus? this way, if someone comes to the school without id, they will not be able to produce it if questioned.

Parents should be able to produce their state identification cards if asked, and confirm their purpose for being there. That is a more reliable solution than school uniforms and doesnt require the conformity they create. As far as gangs not expressing themselves, it would almost be better if they could do so. This way, school administraters and teachers can plainly see who the students are that are most likely to cause problems if they are wearing gang paraphenalia and keep a sharp eye on them. Gang members can just fit right in, not even by their own choice but by mandatory restrictions from the schools. Now what of the drawbacks? school uniforms do not allow students to express themselves. If uniforms are black and white and your favorite color is blue, you cant express that.

Students should be able to attend school with their individuality intact to the greatest extent possible. Offensive clothing is also reasonable to disallow, especially with the variety of cultures in the school environment, and the desire to accomodate all of these varying cultures. Speaking of cultures, multiculturalism and general diversity suffers when uniforms are involved. How can students learn of other cultures when theyre required to all look alike? sure you could converse with others, but sometimes its easier to tell what someones culture might be by the way they dress, and if you are interested in it, youre not just walking up to random people asking questions.

If a school requires uniforms, they are disrespecting the rights of say, a muslim girl, for example, who is expected to wear a hijab over her head in public to conceal her face and head. Then if they make exceptions for the muslim girl, but still disallow headwear for other students, they are making an unfair exception, which could create even more problems. Earlier we said that rich and poor students would not be apparent due to being required to wear the same thing. However, what of the poor families? one must purchase the school uniform, and probably pay $100 or more for clothing that costs $50 or less to manufacture, and if they are required to purchase spares, that can get expensive quickly.

If parents cannot afford these expensive clothes, do their students get kicked out of the school? well some public schools even have adopted uniforms, and those are supposed to be free to all. If i cant afford a $300 set of uniforms, my child cant attend? whats wrong with this picture? this also puts students from poor families at a disadvantage. Sure you could create uniform grants for families that cant afford them, but even that money wouldnt last forever and some families would get lost in the mix.
